Brita pitchers are a lifesaver for clean, great-tasting water—and for keeping plastic bottles out of landfills. They’re simple, cost-effective, and a staple in millions of kitchens

But there’s one question that trips up even loyal Brita users:

Can you safely wash a Brita pitcher in the dishwasher… or will it warp, crack, or stop working altogether?

Tossing it into the dishwasher sounds tempting… no scrubbing, no hassle. But the wrong choice could ruin your pitcher and waste your investment.

I wanted a clear answer, so I tested it myself.

Here’s what I found—and how to keep your Brita clean without costly mistakes.

Why Is This A Concern In The First Place?

We’re not entirely sure if Brita pitchers can withstand the heat and pressure of a dishwasher cycle — and that’s exactly what we’re testing in this article.

But here’s why it’s a valid concern:

  • Material Sensitivity: Brita pitchers are made from materials that might warp or degrade when exposed to high temperatures and strong water jets.
  • Filter Compartment: The filter itself as well as other components are not designed to endure the dishwasher’s cleaning process.

Brita pitchers are made of BPA-free plastic, these materials are not intended for high heat.

The maximum temperature that these plastics can typically withstand before they begin to lose their structural integrity is around 158°F to 176°F (70°C to 80°C).

> In addition, the actual filter units have a maximum temperature of 85°F (29°C). This notes why you should never attempt to filter hot water through your Brita.

Why am I telling you all this?

Because standard dishwashers are known to reach between 120°F to 180°F (49°C to 82°C), which is too high for the recommended maximum temperature exposure of Brita pitchers.

What Does Brita Say About Dishwashing?

There’s no better source to answer this question than to hear it directly from Brita themselves:

“Brita® pitchers and dispensers are NOT dishwasher safe. Hand wash the pitcher/dispenser, lid and reservoir periodically with a mild detergent—never with abrasive cleaners—and rinse well.”

But wait before, we all just accept an answer from Brita, I decided to go ahead and test this out for myself…

Testing The Claim

There’s no better way to find out the truth than to test it ourselves. In the video below, I ran the Brita pitcher (minus the filter) through a full dishwasher cycle to see how it would hold up under real-world conditions.

I disassembled the pitcher into its main components — the lid, reservoir, and base — and left out the filter since it’s definitely not dishwasher safe. Using a normal cycle and standard detergent, I let the dishwasher do its thing.

After two hours, I checked the results:

  • No warping
  • No visible damage
  • Everything fit back together smoothly
  • And best of all — the filter still worked

To be sure, I ran a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) water quality test. Tap water showed readings around 200 PPM, while the Brita-filtered water came in under 90 PPM — proving the filter was still doing its job post-wash.

So, while Brita advises against it, a single dishwasher cycle didn’t ruin the pitcher or affect its performance. Just keep in mind: long-term durability is still unknown.

How to Safely Clean Your Brita Pitcher Instead of Dishwashing

Since the dishwasher is still advised against by Brita, here’s how you can keep your Brita sparkling clean without a dishwasher – all it takes is a quick hand wash.

Here’s a step by step guide:

  1. Disassemble the Pitcher: Remove the filter and any other detachable parts. Depending on the model, you should have 4 parts after disassembly – the lid, the pitcher, the filter, and the reservoir.
  2. Wash with Warm, Soapy Water: Use a mild dish soap and warm water to clean all the components. A sponge or dishcloth works great for this. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or brushes that could scratch the surface. If your pitcher has any algae or smell, consider utilizing some vinegar to remove all the above.
  3. Rinse Thoroughly: After a nice scrub of soap, make sure to rinse off all soapy residues. Soap left behind can affect the taste of your water.
  4. Air Dry Completely: Let all parts air dry completely before reassembling. This helps prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to mold growth.

Pro Tips for a Clean Brita Pitcher

  • Regular Cleaning: Whether you’re hand washing or using the dishwasher, aim to clean your Brita pitcher at least once every few weeks or every time you replace the filter. Regular cleaning prevents buildup of contaminants and keeps your water tasting fresh.
  • Keep the Filter Dry: Always remove the filter before cleaning the pitcher. Filters are not designed to be washed and should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Instead of washing, the filter, you can give it a quick rinse in cold water. For most Britas, the top of the pitcher should come with a smart filter indicator which will turn red when it’s ready to be changed.

In Conclusion

So, can you wash a Brita pitcher in the dishwasher?

So, can you wash a Brita pitcher in the dishwasher?

Technically, yes — but it’s not recommended. While my test showed the pitcher survived a single dishwasher cycle without visible damage, Brita explicitly advises against it.

Regardless of how you clean it, regular maintenance is key to making sure your Brita pitcher continues delivering fresh, great-tasting water.

Stay hydrated — and keep it clean!
