Grounding mats and sheets have reconnected us with the Earth’s healing energies.
However, practical questions often arise regarding their use, one of the most common being:
Do grounding mats and sheets work with clothes on?
This article aims to shed light on how these grounding devices interact with various barriers, such as clothing or bedding, and how you can optimize their effectiveness.
Understanding the Principle of Grounding
Grounding, or earthing, involves direct contact with the Earth’s surface (through grass, sand, bodies of water), allowing the body to absorb electrons.
These electrons help neutralize free radicals within the body, providing a host of benefits that vastly improve health and well-being.

If you’re indoors, you can still obtain the effects of Earths natural charge through the use of grounding mats or sheets which can be fitted to your bed.
These devices provide us the effect of earthing through the connection of the ground hole in an electrical socket. From there, just by touching the mat with your bare skin, you create a conductive path between your body and the Earth.
The Impact of Clothing/Fabric on Grounding Sheets (Tested)

In my exploration of grounding sheets’ effectiveness I wanted to understand how different variables, specifically skin contact and the type of clothing worn, impact the performance of grounding sheets.
So, I set up a simple experiment to see what happens to the grounding effect in certain situations.
Here were the different tests I ran:
- Control – A baseline reading of my own bodies voltage
- Skin Contact – Different readings of my body’s voltage with direct contact with my grounding sheets
- Clothes/Different Material – Different readings of my body’s voltage with a piece of clothing/material between me and the grounding sheets
I used a digital multimeter to track the changes and see what’s going on. Here’s what I did and what I found out:
Baseline Reading
It’s key to first get a baseline reading of my own voltage which you can see in the image below, just around 1 volt.
This is important since if I’m connected to the ground (and the sheets work as they should), my voltage should drop significantly to a number very close to 0 volts.
My baseline voltage (with no connection to the sheets) was just above 1 volt.

Testing Direct Contact with Skin (Back of Hand)
Now just having the back of my hand in contacts with my sheets you can see the volts dropped significantly – a total of 42%

Testing Direct Contact with Skin (Whole Forearm)
This time I place my whole arm on the sheet, you can see the voltage dropped even more – by a total of 72% from the baseline reading.

Testing Direct Contact with Skin (Whole Body Naked)
This was the most interesting and gave me the best results. With my whole body naked on the sheets you can see my voltage dropped to 0.008 volts. Almost zero. A total voltage drop of 99%. This is grounding.

Testing with Thin Clothing
This test I used a thin piece of clothing, my white tank top. A light piece of fabric, we did get a voltage drop of 25%. Not a crazy amount but still some effect. So we still got some lesser effects of grounding.

Testing with Thick Clothing
Now I took a thick sweatshirt and placed the back of my hand on the fabric. The voltage dropped just a little bit, roughly 12%. Not much grounding effect.

Testing with Covers
And lastly I wanted to see how other covers on the bed may affect grounding sheets – and once again just a slight drop in voltage around 14%. Very little grounding effect.

What We Can Conclude
From the six individual tests, I found that:
Direct Skin Contact is Key
The effectiveness of grounding mats and sheets is largely based on maintaining direct contact between the sheets and your skin. The more skin contact the better.
My voltage dropped the most when I had the most skin on the sheets and my voltage dropped the least with thicker materials blocking my contact with the covers.
Now, I know most people wear pajamas while sleeping.
But that doesn’t mean you’re grounding sheets are rendered useless. As long as some part of your skin is in direct contact with the sheets, you’ll get the benefits of grounding.
Embracing the Full Potential: Sleeping Naked with Grounding Sheets
As we saw from the test results, one stood out for its greatest drop in voltage, showcasing it’s effectiveness: fully naked on the sheets
With my whole nude body on the sheets, my voltage dropped to near zero – 0.008 volts.
At 0 volts my body was grounded, receiving all the benefits of Earths electrical charge.

Choosing to sleep naked on your sheets will allow your body to ground for 7-9 hours.
Ensuring maximum skin exposure to your grounding sheets, allows the conductive fibers within the sheet to interact more effectively with the body.
On the other hand, clothing as we saw from the tests will act as an insulating barrier, hindering the conductivity between the body and the grounding sheet.
By sleeping naked, you eliminate this barrier, ensuring that the conductive pathway remains strong and effective throughout the night.
Final Thoughts & Results
Grounding mats and sheets offer a way to connect with the Earth’s natural healing energies, especially when direct contact with the ground is not possible.
Key Points from our Findings:
- Direct Skin Contact is Crucial: The effectiveness of grounding significantly increases with direct skin contact. Tests showed that skin contact leads to a substantial drop in body voltage, indicating effective grounding.
- Impact of Clothing: The tests demonstrated that the type and thickness of clothing can affect grounding effectiveness. Thinner clothing allows for some grounding effect, though less than direct skin contact, while thicker clothing and additional bedding layers reduce the grounding effect considerably.
- Optimal Use: For the best results, sleeping naked on grounding sheets maximizes skin contact, ensuring the body receives the full benefits of earthing. This setup resulted in the most significant drop in voltage, demonstrating effective grounding.
In conclusion, for those looking to maximize the health benefits of grounding sheets, reducing barriers between the skin and the sheets by minimizing clothing can enhance effectiveness. While clothing doesn’t render grounding sheets useless, more skin contact yields better results, as evidenced by the conducted experiments.
