Welcome to the world of saunas, where relaxation meets rejuvenation!

But before you step into that warm oasis of calm, there are a few unspoken rules—sauna etiquette, if you will—that every visitor should know.

Whether you’re a seasoned sauna enthusiast or a first-timer, these tips will help you get the most out of your experience while making sure everyone around you enjoys theirs too!

1. Shower Before You Sauna

This might seem obvious, but it’s often overlooked.

A quick rinse before entering the sauna helps maintain hygiene and keeps the sauna environment pleasant for everyone.

Plus, starting your session clean means your skin can sweat more freely, boosting those detox benefits!

2. Dress Code (or Lack Thereof!)

Saunas are meant to be enjoyed in minimal clothing. In many places, a towel is enough, while some traditional saunas (especially in Finland) prefer you go au naturel.

Always check the local customs and rules of the facility. If you’re using a shared sauna, a towel or swimsuit is usually acceptable, but remember—it’s all about comfort and respect for those around you.

Here in the United States, I’d have to say some form of clothing/towel is preferred. It’s not to say you can’t go naked, just know that you will likely get lots of looks.

3. Keep the Conversation Low-Key

A sauna is a place for relaxation.

Here is a list of the the worst things I’ve seen being done by individuals in the sauna:

  • A full on shadow boxing workout
  • Rapping out loud with their headphones in
  • Blasting music with speakers
  • Taking business calls

Remember, public saunas are a shared place. If it’s your own private sauna, do as you wish.

Light conversation is always fine.

Just be sure to avoid loud chatter, heated debates, or obnoxious music. If you’re with friends, keep the vibe mellow so everyone can bask in the calm, quiet atmosphere.

Think of it like a shared meditation space—less talking, more relaxing.

Focusing on your body, how you feel, and embracing the moment is what its all about anyways.

4. Watch the Sweat Spread

It’s great to get your sweat on, but no one wants to sit in someone else’s puddle.

Always bring a towel to sit or lie on to absorb your sweat.

This simple act shows respect for the next person coming in and keeps the sauna space clean and comfortable for everyone.

From Personal Experience (as seen above): Let’s just say I’ve had the misfortune of encountering the sweat marks of someone’s groin area left on the wood by someone just after they got up.

5. Don’t Be a “Door Dasher”

Saunas operate best when they’re at a consistent temperature, so resist the urge to dash in and out repeatedly.

Every time the door opens, it lets in cool air, disrupting the heat for everyone inside. If you need a breather, step out, cool down, and re-enter when you’re ready for more heat.

6. Limit the Water Pour

In saunas that allow adding water to the stones (like traditional Finnish saunas), be mindful of how much you pour.

A little steam enhances the experience, but too much can make the air feel unbearably hot for others.

If you’re new, ask someone nearby before pouring to ensure you’re not about to send the temperature soaring!

7. Be Mindful of Time

Most sauna sessions last anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes. While there’s no hard rule about how long you can stay, be aware if the space is limited. Share the heat and give others a chance to enjoy the sauna as well. It’s all about balance.

8. Stay Hydrated

Saunas can be dehydrating, so it’s essential to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your session. Most saunas won’t let you bring drinks inside, but keep a bottle handy outside to sip between sessions. Hydration will help you feel refreshed instead of fatigued after your sauna time.

9. Cool Down Considerately

If the sauna has a cold plunge or shower, it’s a great way to refresh after a hot session.

But be mindful—don’t jump into the water while others are in there, and try to towel off quickly afterward to avoid dripping on the floor. It’s a refreshing finish that everyone can enjoy when done thoughtfully.

10. Respect Personal Space

Saunas can get cozy, but personal space still matters.

Don’t crowd others if the sauna is filling up—sit at a respectful distance, and don’t sprawl out if people are waiting for a seat. If it’s packed, be patient and wait for the next round.

A Sauna Experience for You!

Whether you’re at a high-end wellness spa or a neighborhood gym, these sauna etiquette tips ensure you and those around you have the best possible experience.

Saunas are all about unwinding, so when everyone follows these simple rules, it creates a harmonious environment where you can focus on recharging your body and mind.

So go ahead—step into that warmth, take a deep breath, and let the stress melt away. By following these sauna etiquette guidelines, you’re not just treating yourself to an amazing experience—you’re also being a courteous sauna-goer, making the space enjoyable for everyone.

Time to sweat in style!
